Picking The Right Collar For Training
Using a training collar can help make training your dog much easier. There are lots out there, with different features the help lead your dog, stop him or keep him from undesirable behaviors.
There are things you must know about using your dog collar, because some can harm a dog if used incorrectly. It is always best to talk to a trainer before buying a new collar.
Here are some common collars used in training:
Prong Collar
This collar looks like it might be painful, but it really is not. It is made of prongs that are linked to form a colar. When you pull at the collar with your leash, the prongs slightly pinch the dog. The effect is much like the tiny bite a mother dog gives. These collars are useful and safe, but if your dog is a leash yanker, you might not want to use a prong collar.
Fit the collar on his neck so it is snug. You can adjust the size by taking out or adding prongs. You should be able to fit half a finger into the space between the collar and the dog’s neck. If it is loose, it won’t work well and may chafe.
Halti and Gentle Leader
These collars look something like horse harnesses. The idea of these collars is to restrain or restrict the movements of your dog. The halter lets you lead the dog’s head, and its body will naturally follow. These collars are particularly good for dogs that are aggressive and like to lunge.
This collar works well, but sometimes it is a struggle to get it on. Dogs don’t like to have their noses covered. You also have to be extra careful not to hurt your dog, since you will be essentially pulling him by his head.
Choke Collar
The choke collar is somewhat controversial. Advocates say it is a safe and effective way to train your dog, but other say it is a torture device. In truth, it all depends on how it is used.
The way it works is that the trainer can control the amount of pressure on the dog’s throat with the leash. If it is not fitted correctly, this could be deadly to your dog. There is a risk of injuring your dog’s neck. Choke collars are best for new trainers and dogs that like to pull on the leash.
Electronic Collar
People have lots of different reactions to the idea of electronic collars. These collars are actually really humane. Again, it depends on who is using the device and how it is used.
With the electronic collar, the trainer can give the dog tiny electric shocks. The trainer can change the intensity of the shocks. In order to be effective, you should be able to see the dog’s ear twitch. If he yells or howls, it is up too high. Only experienced trainers should use this kind of collar.
